Clitheroe is just across the ‘War of the Roses’ border but well worth a visit!!

Venture just across the Yorkshire/Lancashire border to discover the Forest of Bowland and Ribble Valley with the historic market town of Clitheroe at its heart. This vibrant market town is rich in culture and boasts a Norman Castle with wonderful panoramic views of this beautiful area in Lancashire.

As you walk up to the castle you’ll wind your way through the grounds, children can enjoy a playground and labyrinth and for a small fee you can enter the castle’s interactive museum. The main attraction though is the limestone mound upon which the castle sits proudly and the vistas of the surrounding area including the iconic Pendle Hill are hard to beat.

Clitheroe has a rich culture, combining old and new very successfully. The historic market is every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and always a lively affair with a great selection of fresh local produce, crafts and homeware. In August the town hosts the famous Food Festival which attracts people from far and wide to enjoy lots to eat and drink plus live music. The trendy breweries and bars offer regular drinks plus craft ale and freshly shaken or stirred cocktails. Holmes Mill has one of the longest bars in the country along with a great atmosphere plus an Everyman luxury cinema to enjoy the latest blockbuster releases.

The town isn’t the flattest but does offers glimpses of the Ribble Valley as you explore the characterful high street and winding side streets. With the usual high street shops mixed up with independent boutiques, galleries and eateries, book and craft shops there is something for everyone. Cowman’s famous sausage shop and Byne’s Wine Merchants are highly recommended.

This is a place you will be pleased you’ve breached the border for and it’s only a short drive back to Langcliffe Park in lovely Yorkshire.
