Winter in the Yorkshire Dales

Winter is SPECIAL in the Yorkshire Dales

There are four seasons but we think winter can be one of the very best in this wonderful National Park. The countryside is shrouded in atmospheric colours, the rivers are full with waterfalls cascading over craggy rocks and the hills often appear through misty clouds to expose stunning vistas.

There’s a wonderful choice of winter walks whether you want a breath of fresh air or an exhilarating hike. Riverside paths take you to towns and villages perfect to enjoy a drink and something to eat beside a roaring fire in pretty cafes and traditional Inns. Those who want to go a bit higher can follow upland trails twisting through limestone pavements and there’s always the Yorkshire 3 peaks if you want a real challenge although we’d advise one is more than enough on these shorter days.

Wildlife enthusiasts can look out for Otter footprints in snow and frost. These elusive creatures are nearly always spotted at night but discovering their footprints during the day can be just as exciting. Higher up the Mistle Thrush is quite splendid in the winter sun, you’ll probably hear it singing loudly from the top of a tree before you see it. Birds that that stopover in the Dales at this time of year are Fieldfares and Waxwings, a great place to keep an eye out for winter residents is the bird hide at the far end of magical Malham Tarn, which is quite special. If you are out and about early in the morning look out for Roe Deer as they leap into the distance out of sight, especially if you’re with you with your dog.

As January progresses Snowdrops appear in spite of the cold weather. You’ll see clumps that have naturalised everywhere, snuggled alongside drystone walls, woodland edges and swathes sheltering under tree canopies. The village of Austwick and surrounding countryside always puts on a great Snowdrop show. On clear nights the dark skies lend themselves to some amazing Star Gazing and dare we mention you may get a glimpse of the Northern Lights!

The Yorkshire Dales positively shines in Wintertime but is a wonderful pace to visit all year round. Langcliffe Park is perfect to make the most of your time here in your Campervan, Caravan or Motorhome. Make sure you book a touring holiday and start planning your precious days off within walking distance of the very popular historic market town of Settle plus so much more.
