Sedbergh, Dent and the Howgills are a must!

Whilst on a touring holiday at Settle take the opportunity to venture to some of the most remote parts of Britain. The Western Dales are often by passed by people in a rush to get to the Lake District or further North but we strongly advise you stop a while.

Sedbergh has 4 claims to fame, the largest town in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and very much a border town teetering on the edge of the Dales, Cumbria and Lake District. Brimming over with old-world charm, a cobbled high street, elegant houses and in the shadow of the distinctive Howgill Fells plus at the confluence of four rivers it became an important trading centre. Several successful woollen mills sprang up and the town prospered well into the 19th century. Some highlights, of which there are many, Fairfield Mill with artists at work, exhibitions and crafts plus local fare at the popular restaurant. Book worms will love Westmorland Bookshop, one of the top 10 second hand bookshops in the country.

Dentdale is quite stunning, a narrow single track drive with breath taking views. Starting at Sedbergh it takes you past characteristic white and grey cottages and in spring the fields sway with wild flowers. In autumn and winter the colours are equally stark and dramatic. At the centre of the valley is Dent, possibly the most attractive village in the Dales. You’ll love exploring and discovering tiny shops, the Heritage Centre, traditional Inns and Cafes. Visit in June to experience the annual Dentdale Music and Beer Festival.

The village also boasts Dent Station, on the Settle-Carlisle line and the highest mainline station in England. It is a 4.5 mile walk from the village and catches many a visitor out. Sky high viaducts take the railway line over the valley with fabulous views.

Many people drive past the impressive Howgills whilst travelling on the M6. Very distinctive in shape, the highest point is The Calf at 628m. They are a quite unique upland with rounded hills and alpine flora plus wild fell ponies. There’s some wonderful walking and a challenging 10 mile circuit includes isolated landscapes that take you well and truly off the beaten track.
