Stainforth force and the Craven Limestone Works

Langcliffe Park is a lovely touring site in the Yorkshire Dales located in a perfect position on the edge of this stunning National Park. Just a short stroll from the vibrant market town of Settle, with great public transport links, you can easily spend a holiday here without using the car or having to move your campervan or motorhome. Right on your doorstep are some wonderful walks and a favourite of ours is Stainforth Force and the Craven Limestone Works, approximately 4 miles long.

Turn right coming out of the entrance to Langcliffe Park along a path taking you behind the paper mill then along the pretty mill pond, sometimes an otter has been spotted! You’ll reach a tiny hamlet then proceed along the left-hand riverbank signposted Stainforth to enjoy a quite delightful stretch of the River Ribble.

You’ll approach the waterfalls where salmon can be seen leaping at certain times of the year. At the road if you turn left you can take a break and enjoy a coffee and cake or something more substantial at Knights Table with Dales vistas in all directions.

Re-trace your steps to go into the village of Stainforth and pass the re-opened Craven Heiffer on your right, follow the path signposted Langcliffe taking you through 4 fields running alongside the Settle-Carlisle railway. You will reach the boundary of the Craven Limestone works and the Hoffman Kiln with information boards telling you about the workings and interesting history. Leave the site along the access road with the railway on your right. Follow the signs back to Langcliffe and then along Howson Lane, cross the road and follow the path over the railway bridge and back to the entrance to Langcliffe Park.
